Ways to think about machine learning Benedict Evans
This is an important read about how to think about machine learning. It’s a step change in what we can do with computers, and that will be part of many different products for many different companies. Eventually, pretty much everything will have ML somewhere inside and no-one will care. Mr. Evans gives three types questions organizations can address, existing questions with existing data, new questions with existing data and new data types to analyze (images, video).

It’s not news that local news organizations have been laying off people. One group of recently laid off reporters and editors have decided to create their own news outlet. What’s different this time? The new publication will have a conventional website whose data will be written permanently into the secure digital ledger aka the blockchain. It’s not everyday that you hear about an online retailer partnering with a porn site. Montreal based SSENSE recently partnered with PornHub to examine the data of “desire”. The topic they are diving into is sneaker porn. My guess of the objective, sell more shoes!
The Erosion of Reality Scientific American
The possibility of artificial intelligence becoming well “intelligent” is extremely remote according to Mr. Scharf of the Scientific American. He argues that the technology’s true danger is in misleading us. AI’s ability to manipulate our relationship with information; with facts, and with reality, as we perceive it could be the greatest threat.
